Vetiver is a tall wiry grass which has straight stems, long narrow leaves and white roots underground which grow in a complex latticework. The oil is derived from these roots when the plant is two years old. The oil itself ranges from a rich amber to dark brown color and has a thick syrupy consistency. The scent has be described by many to be a woody, earthy smell reminiscent of a forest floor just after the rain.
Among the most common of uses for Vetiver is as a base for perfumes. Properties of this wonderful oil are antibiotic, antiseptic, antimicrobial, and antioxidant. Other uses for this oil include: headaches, heatstroke, fever, premenstrual tension, muscle aches, sprains, stiffness, rheumatism, insomnia, depression, stress, mental and physical exhaustion, muscle pain, extreme anxiety, flashbacks, hysteria, acne, cuts, eczema, dry skin, wounds, aging skin and irritated skin.
Vetiver has also been know in general to help with grounding, refreshing, restoring, uplifting, and nourishing the soul. It can also be used as an aphrodisiac.
